SDO® Original
Sensory Dynamic Orthoses (SDO®) are fabric devices crafted from high-quality Lycra® and tailored precisely to the patient's measurements.
The objective of Sensory Dynamic Orthosis (SDO®) Class 1 medical devices is to provide ongoing and uniform therapeutic pressure to enhance functional capabilities by utilizing a Lycra® orthosis. Unlike rigid orthoses, SDO® Original garments are flexible, providing pressure and resistance while enabling functional movements.
SDO® Original dynamic Lycra® garments provide the propensity for motor learning and neural integration by:
- Lessening tremors and enhancing fine motor skills, function, and coordination
- Enhancing sensory and proprioceptive feedback
- Addressing abnormal muscle tone
- Boosting postural control and core stability
- Enhancing musculoskeletal stability and alignment
- Improving overall functional performance
- Enhancing movement fluency and neural coordination
- Typically, this leads to reduced pain, increased independence, and potentially improves handling and transferring abilities, along with better breathing and speech.
The Role of Dynamic Compression in Tone Management
Observations in clinical settings and available evidence indicate that wearing the SDO® can enhance positioning, posture, and function by promoting musculoskeletal alignment, postural stability, and sensory feedback. This improvement is believed to result from stimulating the somatosensory and musculoskeletal systems, leading to changes in tone and postural alignment. Consequently, this can enhance proximal stability, provide a biomechanical advantage for muscle activation, and enhance learning strategies. By utilizing the SDO® dynamic Lycra® garment, which offers continuous compression, stretch, support, and sensory input, patients experience therapeutic handling effects for the period of time the garment is worn.
SDO® Original with Reinforcement Panels
Customizing the SDO® Original garment to address the patient's musculoskeletal requirements is possible through the use of reinforcement panels. The prescribing clinician will decide based on the anticipated functional outcomes. Various panels are available and can be used alone or in combination to achieve the desired postural control and body alignment goals.
