How to Measure Feet

Here are two guides for measuring our footwear:

  • The first guide, "Simple Method for Determining Size for Our Standard Width Footwear," offers a straightforward approach for measuring foot length for individuals with standard width feet.
  • The second guide, " Process for Seeking Advice from Our Team and /or when Determining Size for Non-Standard Width Footwear," outlines the measurement process for individuals with wider or narrower feet, those using orthoses like an SMO or AFO, or those seeking advice on size and style from our team. We recommend all allied health professionals to follow this method.

Simple Method for Determining Size for Standard Width Footwear:

  • This guide offers a straightforward approach for measuring foot length for individuals with standard width feet and who may also use a thin foot orthotic.
  • It involves measuring foot length, adding extra length for wiggle room and growth, and selecting the best fit based on the shoes inside length.
  • The footwear brands we carry that offer a standard width fitting are: Aurelka, Medica, and Memo.
  • Consult a healthcare professional for footwear advice before making a purchase.

What You Need:

  • 2 blank A4 sheets, a pencil, a flexible tape measure or ruler.

Tracing Feet:

  • Trace both feet while standing with feet aligned under the hips. If standing isn't possible, trace while seated with knees bent at 90 degrees and some weight on the leg.
  • Use a thin pen to outline each foot and trace foot orthotics if they will be worn inside the shoes.

Finding the Length:

  • Mark and measure foot length from the heel to the longest toe to the nearest millimetre without rounding. Keep the original tracings as further assistance may be required.
  • Record measurements for both feet and use the larger foot's measurements for sizing decisions.

Adding Allowances for Wiggle Room and Growth:

  • Add additional allowances for wiggle room and growth for children:
    • For open-toed sandals: Add about 1.0cm to foot length.
    • For enclosed boots: Add about 1.5cm to foot length.
  • Add slightly less allowance for young toddlers e.g. 0.8cm open-toed sandals, e.g. 1.0cm for enclosed boots.
  • The addition of the allowance to the foot length gives the overall inner length of the shoe required.
  • Use the actual measured length of full-length foot orthotics, without adding any allowances, as the overall inner length of the shoe required.
  • Consider individual growth rate and needs when selecting the appropriate allowance.

Choosing the Right Size:

  • Refer to the footwear sizing charts which display the inner length of the footwear at each size.
  • Find the size that aligns closed to overall inner length requirement calculated above.
  • Find the best matching size without going up or down too far.
  • Contact us for further assistance if needed.
  • Stocked footwear may be returned and exchanged for the correct size.
